Adj Assoc Prof Low, an internationally renowned ear surgeon, was conferred a PhD in recognition of his work relating to ear disorders. After completing his ENT specialist medical training in Singapore & England in 1995, he went on to Australia for advanced training in treating ear conditions like hearing loss, vertigo (giddiness), tinnitus (noise in ear), ear infections and tumors. His interest in the role of Traditional Chinese Medicine in modern ENT practice also led him to a Diploma in Acupuncture.
He is currently Adjunct Associate Professor at the NUS-Duke Graduate Medical School and a medical board member of the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore. He previously worked at Singapore General Hospital, Singapore’s largest teaching hospital, as Head of its ENT Department and Director of its Centre for Hearing and Ear Implants.
After performing the first pediatric cochlear implant surgery in Singapore, he went on to perform more than 500 cochlear implant surgeries in children and adults from Singapore and overseas including Indonesia, Malaysia and China. He was the first to study and publish racial differences in anatomy of the mastoid facial nerve, important knowledge which could help to prevent paralysis of the face caused by nerve injury during complex ear surgeries which he regularly performs.
Adj Assoc Prof Low was instrumental in implementing universal newborn hearing screening in Singapore. Having run regular clinics as Visiting Specialist at KK Children’s and Women’s Hospital for a number of years, he is also well-versed in managing children with other general ENT conditions such as tonsil infections, adenoids, Eustachian tube dysfunction and bleeding/sensitive nose.
A nominee for National Outstanding Clinician in the inaugural National Medical Excellence Award in 2008, he has interest in research which can potentially improve treatment outcomes in patients with various ENT disorders. He has authored more than 70 peer-reviewed publications in journals/books, including those concerning hearing, vertigo, nose cancer, blocked nose, headaches and snoring.
He has taken on several leadership roles in the training and education of ENT doctors. He is President and a founding member of the ASEAN Academy of Neuro-otology and Audiology. He has also served as Chairman of Singapore’s Specialist Training Committee, Director of Singhealth’s ENT Residency Program and President of the Singapore Otorhinolaryngology Society.
He also sets aside time for volunteerism. Besides being President of the Singapore Association for the Deaf, he has visited countries like China and Indonesia to help needy patients.
